Serevent Side Effects Lawsuit News
FDA Meets on Safety of Glaxo Asthma Drug11/28/2007 - Government advisers on Wednesday will consider whether a GlaxoSmithKline asthma drug poses greater risks to children than to adults. The Food and Drug Administration has asked a panel of outside experts to review Glaxo's Serevent as part of a three-day meeting on the safety of medicines taken by children. Serevent is an inhalable drug that contains the same key ingredient as Advair, London-based Glaxo's top-selling product. Last year, FDA added a "black box" warning, the most serious a drug can carry, to both drugs, cautioning that they can increase the risk of asthma-related death. Adults are instructed to use inhalable steroid therapy alongside Serevent and Advair to offset their risks. But FDA said ahead of the meeting that steroidal therapy may not have the same protective effect in children. FDA will ask its experts whether additional studies are needed to judge the benefits and risks of Serevent and other asthma drugs in children. Sales of Serevent totaled $602 million last year. The drug's U.S. patent is due to expire in 2008.
